Meet your Avatar: Julius Drewe
Julius Drewe (4 April 1856 – 20 November 1931) was an English businessman, retailer and entrepreneur, who founded Home and Colonial Stores and ordered the building of Castle Drogo in Devon, just down the road from Chagford Primary School!
The development at Chagford C of E Primary School will see a new building constructed to replace the existing 1930’s school as part of the governments ‘Priority Schools Build Programme’.
The new two-storey construction will provide an energy efficient, flexible and robust building which fits perfectly within the existing built landscape of Chagford.
Chagford Primary School and Chagford School PTFA host many events and participates in many community activities, and have been involved in many projects over the past year. Examples of these include the Orchard Project at Castle Drogo, Ground Force Days and CSV Make A Difference Day, where everyone participated in community jobs locally within Chagford. We also have a regular summer fair, school disco, and autumn apple pressing day with farmers’ market.
Since initial conception the project has undergone extensive community involvement, including consultations with school governors, Chagford Parish Council, Dartmoor National Park, Devon Highways and the local community.
This level of community engagement has been maintained now that construction has begun, regular assemblies are held teaching students about building sites, a time capsule will soon be buried under the main hall, and a competition has been run for the students to design a construction health and safety poster, the winner of which will have their poster displayed on the site hoarding.
The building has been designed to minimise energy usage through passive design measures, including building orientation, thermal performance, low air permeability, LED lighting, optimising external glazing to maximise natural day lighting and efficient heat generating plant. In addition to this the building will utilise photo-voltaic panels to generate green electricity and natural ventilation stacks on the roof.
Chagford C of E Primary School is one of the largest developments currently underway in Chagford. The existing school was constructed in 1936, and in 2014 the scheme received funding from the Government’s ‘Priority School Building Programme’, aimed at transforming some of the most run-down schools in the country, ensuring children and young people are being taught in an environment where they can fulfill their potential.
The new building will be built on the existing playing field to the front of the existing site, and then new external play areas and sport facilities are to be recreated on the site of the old building. Work on the new construction began on 14th of August 2017, with works scheduled to complete in July 2018, the second phase of works will see the existing building demolished and replaced by a new playing field by December 2018.
